Ms. Love's Music Education Background Please view several recordings of my Piano Lecture-Recital at George Mason University on You Tube. I am performing the Rhapsody in B Minor, Op. 79, No. 1 by Johannes Brahms. The second recording captures my performance of the Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms. The third recording is a more recent performance at the Steinway Recital Hall in Tyson's Corner. This unique work contains classical and jazz idioms. I am performing a piece by Rodion Shchedrin entitled, Im Stile von Albeniz. Additionally, I accompany flute, clarinet, bassoon, euphonium, trombone, violin, viola, cello and a host of other instruments for Solo and Ensemble Festival in Loudoun County and Fairfax County.
I am a classically trained musician who started performing on flute and piano at the age of eight. I continued my flute lessons and piano lessons through high school and college and have over 11 years of teaching experience. I graduated from UCLA with a BA in flute performance in 1994 and an MM in Piano Pedagogy (Teaching) and Performance from George Mason University in January 2011. In 2004, I was awarded a $900 Teacher Enrichment Grant from the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA) to further my piano teaching. I am experienced as a solo performer, chamber musician and accompanist. In 2003 and 2005, I accompanied several members of the United States Continental Army Band in a special chamber series. In summer 2007, I won a piano scholarship to perform at the Las Vegas Music Festival. I performed in master classes with MykoIa Suk and James Giles. I attended PianoSummer ’09 at SUNY-New Paltz where I participated in master classes, recitals and received piano lessons with master teachers from Curtis Institute of Music, Rice University, Arizona State University, and Mannes College of Music. I received private lessons from Vladimir Feltsman, Susan Starr and Robert Roux. Additionally, I have attended Oberlin Flute Festival, and Skidmore Flute Festival. My past piano teachers included Moacir Santos, the famed and late Brazilian pianist who collaborated with the late Sarah Vaughan, Dr. Paul Pitman from Encino, California, Dr. Andrey Kasparov, piano professor at Old Dominion University, Dr. Eric Ruple, piano professor at James Madison University, Dr. Joanne Haroutounian, internationally renowned piano pedagogue, Julie Hahn, NCTM, and graduate of Peabody Conservatory and Catholic University, Dr. Ana Balakerskaia, graduate of St. Petersburg Conservatory and piano professor at George Mason University and Darya Gabay, graduate of St. Petersburg Conservatory. While attending UCLA, I studied flute with Sheridan Stokes, Susan Greenberg, Diane Alancraig, David Shostac and Geraldine Rotella. The above teachers were orchestral musicians who performed flute in professional symphony orchestras. I received extensive training in technique and sound production which can not be achieved through a local school music program or a music store. My private teachers encouraged me to spend several hours perfecting major and minor scales and arpeggios which strengthen the lips and improve ultimate control over the sound produced on the flute. I was taught that sound is of utmost importance in flute playing. Additional focus was placed on breathing, proper use of the diaphragm, rhythm, technique and intonation. I have performed in master classes with the late Julius Baker who taught at Julliard and Curtis Institute of Music, Michel Debost and Kathleen Chastain, flute professors at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Jeffrey Khaner, principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Upon moving to Virginia, I also studied with the late Judith Lapple who had numerous national and local competition winners. As a college student, I won a scholarship and concerto performance of the Nielsen Flute Concerto with the Brentwood Symphony in Brentwood, California. I won honorable mention and third place in the UCLA Concerto Competition and performed the Griffes Poem with the UCLA Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, I was awarded an Education Enrichment Grant ("Excellence in Diversity") from the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and received a $500 cash award to attend Brevard Music Center. I also attended Idyllwild Summer Music Academy for four consecutive years from 1989 to 1993. I played second flute in the American Youth Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Mehli Mehta and guest conducted by Zubin Mehta and Yehuda Gilhad. Additionally, I played principal flute with the UCLA Symphony Orchestra in a special "Opera Series," conducted by Placido Domingo. In 2006 and 2007, I was a member of The Tidewater Winds, a professional Concert Band which continues to present concerts in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.
